In 1786, Captain Francis Light founded the Prince of Wales' Island (now known as Penang) as a trading post for the English East India Company. Thirty years later, on 21st October 1816, the first English school in South-East Asia was established on the island by the Colonial Chaplain, Revd Robert Sparke Hutchings. In his book LET THE AISLES PROCLAIM, the author, Quah Seng Sun, provides an in-depth narrative into the long history of Penang Free School's first 200 years.
